Fixed ISO Values

Although it is more work, we prefer to set our camera to specific ISO values. As noted in the ISO command scale, this ranges from 200 to as high as 25600. We like to take pictures of landscapes and one of our favorite tricks is to use a slow shutter speed to blur the movement of water. This task is surprisingly difficult. In part, this is due to the sensor’s sensitivity to light. When the ISO is set to a value of 200, the typical shutter speed required around noon is in the hundredths of a second. To get a slow shutter speed of 1 second or longer requires using neutral density filters. In addition to the neutral density filters, we use the extended ISO feature of the camera. When you use this, the lowest the ISO can be set to is 100. This allows us to increase our shutter speed from 1 second to 2 seconds to blur the moving water. You extend the ISO by setting the following command to [ON]:

MENU/SET>Rec (5)>Extended IS0>[ON], [OFF]

When you press the ISO button, the ISO scale now ranges from 100 to 25600 (figure 6-11).
